2015 Position paper: Optimal Approaches to Adult Weight Management Services in Ireland (Public)

Position of the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute: Optimal Approaches to Adult Weight Management Services in Ireland

Current treatment options for the management of overweight and obesity in adults are multi-faceted and include dietary, exercise and behaviour interventions, use of pharmacological agents and surgical procedures. Interventions to support patients in achieving healthy and sustainable eating and exercise behaviours for improved health and quality of life should be evidence-based. The Weight Management Interest Group (WMIG) of the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI) have developed a guidance document (Optimal Approaches to Adult Weight Management by Dietitians in Ireland, 2013) summarising the current available evidence for weight management to support Dietitians in Ireland in the clinical management of overweight and obese adults. It is also intended as a resource for medical and other health care professionals to refer to for best practice in obesity treatment.

This document details the optimal service design for the treatment of overweight and obesity in adults and highlights the cost benefit of nutrition services in obesity management. It also summarises the key positions of the WMIG clinical guidance document.
