Good quality nutritious food is crucial to maintaining the health, well being and independence of older people” (Mulvihill, M. & Pyper S. 2001). Nutrition is increasingly being recognised as a vital component in the care of older people in residential care. The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) in 2008, produced the National Quality Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People, to help improve and to assure quality and safety of residential care. In addition, there are numerous guidelines & policies developed at local level.
The aim of this factsheet is to address issues which commonly arise in residential care facilities, in a questions and answers style format.
